Revisiting Autism and Pilates

Autism continues to hit the news (see article below). The Sunday Parade had a warming article on the many facets of autism. Today, the local news reported a missing teenager. The greater emphasis? He had autism. The good news? He was found.

My heart's concerns have broadened due to having clients whose children have autism. While I have not trained any of the children in Pilates, I have been a nutritional consultant for them. Before we get into physical and nutritional suggestions, let's take a look at the face of autism.

Considering 30+ years ago autism stats were 1 in 10,000 children, the 21st century stats are alarming. According to the Center for Disease Control 1 in 166 children are living with some form of autism's daily demands. Too, we know that boys are more likely to be its choice. Why? is the clarion call. Is it genetics? Is it the mercury in vaccines? Is it in the food they eat? So many unanswered questions.

Thankfully, we have evolved into a greater sensitivity from the past. Years ago (early 1900s) Eugen Bleuler coined the name autism and claimed it was schizophrenia. In the 1940s others(Bruno Bettelheim, Leo Kanner)blamed it on what was called, "The Refrigerator Mother". Mothers of autistic children were accused of not providing sufficient amounts of interaction with their child, therefore causing the autism. In 1964 Bernard Rimland wrote Infantile Autism shedding new light and redeeming these misaligned mothers. Then came Rain Man with Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman giving autism the long awaited audience it deserved.

Over 30 years ago was my first encounter with autism. My fiance, at the time, was researching the subject for his degree in psychology. It definitely caught my attention. Little did we know just how profound it would hit our society and people we would come to know and love.

Pilates and Autism?
Yes, the two can work well together. While I have not had the privilege of working with a client with autism, I know that Pilates can provide a healthy piece to the puzzle.

Dawn-Marie Ickes is an example. She is a PT as well as a certified Pilates instructor and has reported positive results while working with children with autism. She found that Pilates helped with both movement transitions and environment transitions which are the two biggest challenges autistic children face. She found a way to incorporate activities to keep them organized before working on their gait-related issues and motor skills. She focused on their vestibular and proprioceptive systems as a prep activity which helped the therapeutic intervention.

She incorporated the Pilates Reformer and the jump board as well in their therapy. The Reformer helped them to focus and transition from exercise to exercise as well as giving them a sense of better balance and awareness. The jump board helped to provide a linear combination of vestibular and proprioceptive input. To read more about her findings, please check out: Pilates' Surprising Benefits, November 2006.
Please note that it is NOT recommended that an autistic child be placed under the care of just any Pilates instructor but a highly qualified professional who understands not just Pilates but autism rehabilitation.
Nutrition Therapy?
That will have to be the topic of another post. I will say nutrition, I believe, is a critical part of the solution. Which vitamins, supplements, foods, etc. to use? While I believe there are definitely certain ones that prove to be helpful, as in any case, each child is an individual with unique nutritional needs.
Let's pray for a cure. In the meantime, I hope we all find a way to be a part of the solution. Some suggestions:
  1. Be an encouragement to those whose children have autism
  2. Contributing financially to the cause
  3. Learning more about it and sharing what we know
The following is an article worth noting:Health Highlights: April 24, 2008 - MSN Health & Fitness - Health Topics:
"Proximity to Mercury Pollution Source Linked to Autism Risk The first study to show a statistical relationship between autism and proximity to industrial sites that release mercury has been published by researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Their analysis of data from 1,040 Texas school districts and data from 39 coal-fired power plants and 56 industrial facilities in the state showed that autism rates decreased by one percent to two percent for each 10 miles of distance from a mercury pollution source.

Among the other findings: For every 1,000 pounds of mercury released by all industrial sources in Texas in 1998, there was a corresponding 2.6 percent increase in autism rates in Texas school districts in 2002. For every 1,000 pounds of mercury released by Texas power plants in 1998, there was a corresponding 3.7 percent increase in autism rates in Texas school districts in 2002.

The research appears in the journal Health & Place. 'This study was not designed to understand which individuals in the population are at risk due to mercury exposure. However, it does suggest generally that there is greater autism risk closer to the polluting source, lead author Raymond Palmer, associate professor of family and community medicine, said in a prepared statement. -----"

Some Times We Can't Keep The Bed Bugs Away!

On a wellness note, since many of us have not had "hard" winters, here is my pick for an immune booster: Wellness Formula.

When I say "hard," many of you know that I mean we have not had hard enough freezes to kill off all the "bugs." Those pesky little critters will attack when you least expect, like they did me this morn while I lay sweetly asleep.

I'm usually free of winter ills, and I never take a flu shot (my personal method to fighting the flu, and it's worked for years). Well, you know, I am not negating Pilates as a means of keeping the immune system up and running full speed over the bugs!

If I have a sign of anything that seems a tad off, like this morn (scratchy throat), I usually take six the first time, not the three they are allowed to suggest. However, I would not take them on an empty stomach. If you have a sensitive nature, I would advise you go with recommended amount or less on bottle.

You should be able to find it at your local health food or GNC type stores.

 Off to kill more bugs...

Autonomy For A Day!

Happy July!

As we celebrate our nation's Independence, I hope you all have a safe and happy holiday week-end.
Also, my tip to you for the holiday is to, yes, stay safe, but why not find something you can celebrate in your own life. Something that you want to free yourself from. Or maybe free yourself "to."
We all have bondages that enslave us to a measure of detriment. What is yours?

  • Eating too much? Not enough?
  • No exercise?
  • Eating too many sweets?
  • Watching too much TV or Internet?
  • Moodiness?
  • Being unkind?
  • Making fun of others?
  • Being a know-it-all?
  • Passivity? Aggressive-passivity?
  • Controlling?
  • Not getting enough or too much sleep?
  • Not being able to sit still?
  • Living in drama?
  • Wearing guilt as a badge?
  • Taking no time for yourself or too much?
The list goes on. Whatever it is, pull in the reins for a day. Just a day. Even half of a day. The results? A keen sense of freedom that may lead to not just the moment but for the rest of your life. How do you know?

Too, check out the side-bar, as I have updated the menu for the month.

Love Those Hookas????

The other day my hub called and told me he'd be a few hours late coming home that night. He sounded a little distracted. And he didn't give me much info, other than he was visiting someone about a new account. Hmmmm, I thought as I hung up the phone.

Later upon his tardy return, I was curious, so I politely inquired about the delay . Nonchalantly, he told me had been to a "hooker lounge?" A WHAT ????

He seemed very happy about the whole incident, but what distressed me most was his seemingly lack of regard to my feelings on the matter.

Getting control of my thoughts of wringing his neck, I opted for deeper inquiry. I calmly asked, "A what lounge?"

Without a blink, he responded, "A hookah lounge."

"OK, would you please spell that?" as I took my pen in hand.

"Sure...H-O-O-K-A-H!"

"What the heck is a hookah?" After a lengthy explanation, I sheepishly confessed that I thought he said he was at a hooker lounge. In unison we chimed in laughter over my imaginative interpretation.

But, really, what is a hookah, if not a hooker? And are they so different?

Hookers And Hookahs...
  • They come in all sizes and shapes.
  • They can be both fascinating and alluring.
  • They both might share concerns with the influences they may bring into your life.
  • They can used for entertainment.
  • They are not conducive to share with your children.
  • They are not typically for a family gathering.
  • They take as much time as you like.
  • They can be expensive or inexpensive, depending on where you go to get it.
  • They might be plastic.
  • They have been around for centuries.
  • They can be addictive.
  • They can get you into trouble with your health.
  • They give you an outlet when you think you need one.
  • They can waste your time and money.
  • They allow you to pay now and later, but mostly both.
  • They both present opportunities to play with fire.
  • They both will cost you more in the end than the beginning.
We Know What Hookers Are, But What Is A Hookah?
  • While hookers have inhabited America, the land of the free, since time began, Hookah lounges are just now attracting an audience across our nation.
  • However, hookah has its roots in the mid-eastern culture almost as far back as prostitution.
  • Hookah, (aka shisha) is what I'd call a water pipe or bong. I guess that dates me. The 70s. I know "you" know nothing about such a thing.
  • Hookah is all about smoking fashionably in a socially friendly environment.
  • Shisha is known as the tobacco or the tea that is used in the hookah. However, shisha is aka the pipe itself.
  • Hookah smoking has been used through the ages as a means to relax and chill with friends.
The question has been, is hookah smoking safe? Or safer than other forms of smoking? The answer according to the medical profession, is no. Read the side-bar and check out the link for more info.
While you may find yourself enjoying lounging at a Hookah, you will have to consider whether it's worth your while.

Like at any social gathering, you will find r&r amidst an array of casually dressed settings. Settings such as the lounge my hub was checking out as an account. Of course I had to go sneak a peek if I was going to report on it. Right?
Quite interesting.

My Experience With Hookas
Upon walking in, I was warmly embraced by the bluesy, jazz sounds lofting through a spicy fruit flavored aroma. The spacious room greeted me with open arms. Yet, it was wrapped in small packages of soft and subtle earthy tones. Each an island surrounded with its own charming character. Some with large cushy sofas, some solely with comfy chairs. All with tables fitted perfectly for engaging conversations while smoking hookah (or in my case, not smoking).

The lounge carefully carried the theme of the 20s though arrayed with an eclectic flare. Did I say quite interesting? How about intriguing? Definitely inviting to the weary worn seeker needing solemnity.
Some lounges offer alcoholic as well as non-alcoholic drinks, others ask that you bring your own. Others offer food while some request you bring your own. I would imagine all offer a place for you to just chill and enjoy yourself. Yes, there is usually a cover-charge.

Music? It will vary. In the lounge I went to, I heard a variety but all enjoyable to the hearing palate. This particular lounge offers nights on the week-ends with a professional DJ as well as an opportunity for gatherers to dance the night away. Speaking of which, most of the lounges don't open until around 4 and many stay open until the wee hours of the morning, on week-ends.

The age group? You guessed it. The 20s. Although you will find all ages taking part in this bluesy leisure experience.

In one corner, you may see a group playing cards or watching a game. Then another in contemplative discussion, while a different group might be steamed in heavy debate. But all carefully engaged with one another somehow.

Besides the second hand smoke, of which, I will have to say, I didn't even notice, the hooka lounge was an inviting experience that cost me nothing. And that is welcomed in a time of recession and chaos.

Is It For You?
You may have to step out of your comfort zone if you care to even explore the idea. It's certainly not for all. And I can't say it's a place I'd want to frequent. But now and again? Sure. There was nothing dangerous of my soul being stolen, and I didn't smell like smoke upon leaving. And I did find it a safe place to learn about people with a little different view than myself. A different culture.

I'd say it's probably as safe as any restaurant you walk into that has a bar. Or one that still allows smoking. You are exposed to alcohol in both of those cases. So unless you can find a smoke free, alcohol free place to eat or relax, a hookah lounge might not be such a bad idea.

And while the person smoking hookah may be doing themselves more harm, the second hand smoke didn't come close to what I've encountered from cigarettes or cigars in even the best ventilated restaurants.

Am I Condoning It?
I didn't say that. I said it's up to you. Any time we smoke, we take a risk. I am saying that I'd have to tell you to stay out of most any restaurant if I were going to use the same standards. I am just here to inform what my experience has been. And it's only been one. Your best bet is to inform yourself before proceeding.
By the way, while I imagine that hookers may always be...but...

HOOKAH NEWS-FLASH: In light of the govt seizing authority over tobacco via FDA, hookah lounges may soon be blowing up in smoke or at least come to a burning halt. There is debate as to what the standards, the regulations will be for these various venues of smoking, be they restaurants, cigar, or hookah lounges. We shall see. DMN 6/12/09

Extraordinary Measures ♥

For certain, I made a memory this week. But not just any memory, but one that my future great-grandchildren will hear about for certain!  I won tickets to see a private elite screening of the upcoming movie, Extraordinary Measures, starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser, and Keri Russell.

Along with tickets to the screening was the "bucket list" opportunity to get to greet and meet one of my fave actors, Harrison Ford. Suffice it to say, I must be, as one friend described, starstruck! Days later, can you believe I'm still wearing the band that allowed us into the screening with Mr. Ford? Oh my. And, for certain, I'm still reliving meeting him eye to eye, face to face, smile to smile. What a class act he is.

Mr. Ford is not only starring in this film, he is producing it as well. As a matter of fact, this will be his premiere production. So he can add this to his multiplicity of accomplishments, such as being an accomplished pilot and master carpenter, just to name a few. Geee, I do need new cabinets in my laundry room, and I have been looking for a good flight instructor.

But What's The Movie About?
Based on the true story and book, The Cure about John and Aileen CrowleyExtraordinary Measures unfolds a heart rending movie that will steal your heart. The Crowley's story is not an easy one to watch, yet they bring over the top inspiration to the audience.

I highly recommend taking the time to go see this movie coming to your area in wide release on January 22, 2010. It will give you hope when you feel like the medical field has no answers to your cure. Indeed, it will infuse a passion to take control and have say over your health and wellness.

EXtra Sites to Check Out!
Harrison Ford audio interview about the film. Take the time to listen to his audio. I think you'll get a better feel for the movie as well as the ♥ of Harrison Ford.

LN's RX = God and Aspirin

Wishing you all a-not-so-stuffed Thanksgiving week-end. We have so much to be appreciative of, do we not? The list goes on into eternity, or at least it should.

Probably number one on our list of what we want to have to be thankful for is wellness, wouldn't you say?

Yesterday as we sat around the wonderfully decorated Thanksgiving spread at my daughter's, we were not giving our health much thought as we began to dive into all the delicacies that only Thanksgiving brings us each year. Why should we? After all, isn't it the time of year we pleasure ourselves, not giving an ounce of consideration to our well being?

But then, in a flash, everything we know and feel safe in can change. Like yesterday.

Just as we gathered around that glorious table of enticements, oblivious to anything but our own cravings, something less self-indulging was being required of us.

Little Ma had asked me to help her remove her sweater as she was sweating. Very odd, I thought. She NEVER gets cold, but I passed it off and continued to embrace the food before me. But then...I sensed a deathly quiet creeping nearby. When I turned, Little Ma was beginning to slump over in her chair without having touched a morsel of her food. Jumping to my feet, I ran to her rescue. Most of you know, this has been common place for me these past 12 plus years. Yet, never is it less frightening.

I felt the flurry of commotion dancing around me, but my mind, body, and soul stayed at one with hers. Was this going to be "the day?" I prayed not.

The young children were quickly exited to the kitchen so as not to scare them anymore than their little minds already were. So there Ma, my daughter, and I were. Alone. Yet together. That's what counted on this day of thanks.

Ma was clearly "stroking." Who gave this vile enemy the right? The right to seize Little Ma's body and mind? Who would give the right to return her to us? Only God.

She became all but incoherent. Her eyes became glazed and fixed, no movement. Her body stiffened like a corpse. Silence filled the room; it was deafening.

I began to work my mojo, as this generation would say. Humanly speaking, I began to do my part in bringing her back. I never take credit, folks. NEVER. For me, it is God who wills when we live, when we die. But He chooses to use me, at times.

So many times, I've been asked, "How?" How do I bring her back? Again, I'm not the Divine Healer here. I'm just the messenger.

However, I will say, as you've probably heard how many times, one word: Aspirin. Specifically, I use Baby Aspirin. NEVER use coated in cases like this. You want it to be able to dissolve quickly so that it quickly gets into the system of your "patient."

Amazingly, though she is all but dead, she has always been able to follow my lead and chew the aspirin and swallow. God?

And once again, she refused to allow death's sting to usher her away from us. She came to. She could tell me how many fingers I had, follow my finger from side to side. And when asked what day it was, she replied, though through a weakened voice, "Well, Thanksgiving, of course!" Like, "You big dummies!!!!"

The rest of the day she slept. Her body had taken the hit as it will do when our organs begin to shut down. But not before she asked if she could have a bite of pumpkin pie. Only Little Ma!!!!

Thanking God for another day with Ma.

Blessings.

NOTE: I keep a small bottle of baby aspirin with me at all times. Try it; it might save someones life! Including your own. ♥

No, Cheeze, Please!

Addicted to "cheese"? I don't mean the kind found in blocks at the local grocery store, but the whitish-powdery looking kind hidden deep in the heart of Texas. And not made from the help of Texas cattle.
While some of us may be addicted to the yellow, white, or mixed varieties of cheese that we either like on our food or just by itself, others are suffering with an addiction to a different kind of non-dairy demon, called "cheese." Heroine laced with Tylenol.

As I began to research for this article, I couldn't help but remember a young girl about 14 years old who was tempted to "try" heroin one bright sunny day in the halls of her junior high school.

She and her friend gathered around the clean colored powder before them. Debating whether they should or should not. The innocence of not knowing what they were about to get themselves into was in control. The reality of heroin's power eluded them. But something saved them.

To this day I am not sure what stopped me from stepping over into that dark journey. Yes, I said ME. I cannot tell you how many times I have looked back on that very moment in my life and thanked God that I stopped before it was too late. But many are not and were not so fortunate.

What is "Cheese" Heroin?
  • "Cheese" is Mexican black-tar heroin that has been diluted with crushed tablets of over-the-counter sleep medication.
  • The OTC is usually Tylenol PM. When diluted it's about 1-3 percent heroin. The problem with that is though it may be low doses of heroin, the effect wears off more quickly requiring more frequent hits to keep the high.
  • Cheese is a cheap high at $2-$10 a packet, therefore making it more appealing to the lower income populations.
  • Cheap with an expensive end...death.
  • Demographically it's used more among Hispanic people, especially those who are Spanish-speaking families with immigrants. Not that other cultures are immune to being strangled by it as well. It seems to be more isolated to the state of Texas. The concern it that it will begin and has begun to spread to other parts of the country.
  • Cheese is being used mainly by the very young. Heroin is typically used by older adults.
Cheese is highly dangerous to children. Of course it is, you say, as I did when I first read that in an article. Yet, when you look closer, you will understand why that's even necessary to be stated.
  • For one, children, more than adults do not consider the danger and often don't realize it is indeed deadly.
  • Some don't realize that it's heroine.
  • It's cost worthy to them for the high.
  • But the cost soars when that high insists that they return for yet another trip.
And once they are hooked, they are blinded to what is really happening to them. For many, they are taking it every day with little thought other than it makes them feel good. Quickly, cheese grabs them by the throat without warning. Then if they begin to quit taking it, the withdrawals are desperately painful. And sometimes deadly.

"Reports that we were seeing were pretty striking. Kids as young as 9 or 10 years of age coming to the hospital emergency rooms or detox facilities in acute heroin withdrawal," says Dr. Carlos Tirado, a psychiatry professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center and medical director of a drug treatment center in Dallas.

"We didn't know what to do with a 9-year-old in opiate withdrawal, or what the treatment ramifications of that are," Tirado says. "Do you send a 9-year-old to an AA meeting." March 2, 2008

Dallas Morning News reported on a young 17 year old girl, Sarah, who was addicted to cheese. She had struggled with the habit for some time. Her best friend reported that Sarah had been taking drugs since she was in middle school. The break-up of her family seems to have been a catalyst.
Sarah had tried to get help through treatment centers, but to no avail.

Toward the end, as an exercise at her drug-treatment center, she wrote her own obituary:
"A 17-year-old Hispanic female was found died. She went to Emmit J. Conrad High School and was in the 9Th grade. Her name was Sarah Alejandra Aviles. Sarah was a beautiful young women but had problems hanging with the wrong crowd.
"A lot of her friends were gang banger and they sold drugs. She had a 21-year-old brother, and a 8-year-old baby sister, a loving, struggling mother but a father that wasn't really there." Dallas Morning News 3/15/09

What a tragedy. What a loss. My heart hurts for her family. And for those suffering in this addiction.
Addiction is a strange lot. I've counseled with people controlled by this deadly disease over the years. So many never make it. And the ones that do continue to struggle more than you or I can even begin to imagine.
It's easy for some to judge people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol. I often wonder if those who do not have these issues ever look at what they are addicted to? Money, things, prestige, authority, control, manipulation, church, their religion. You see, it comes in all forms. And it has one thing in common: DEATH.
I hope we all find better ways to get our lives in order.

Don't Blow Things Out of Perspective, Please!

Recently my fav Pilates mag highlighted actress Lisa Rinna as an avid Pilates student.

I appreciated how Pilates has helped her keep that gorgeous figure; however, her "looks" seemed a little contradictory with the very nature of Pilates. Her face didn't come from the system, neither did her bust size.

Perhaps you find me a twinkle harsh. Maybe. But know that I believe Lisa would be a beautiful woman without all the injections.

I wish women in the media would embrace life and not always try to defy it or even deny it. Read the stats on the negative effect the media has on our young girls. Sobering.

An Interesting Study
I recently read a study where 1200 teenage girls were asked if they used the media as their gauge on how they should look/behave? There was a resounding, YES! And when asked would they continue embracing this as a "social benefit" even if it compromised their principles with family and faith? Ninety-eight percent said YES! (Lies Young Women Believe, DeMoss and Gresh).

We have a serious problem, and I don't look for it to resolved. The key is that we are going to have to begin right where we are. Each of us must begin to make better decisions based on clear mental and emotional health, not the example of the distorted media.

Lisa's Mouth Confession

I do salute Lisa for coming clean. RINNA: 'I OVER-INJECTED FACE FILLER' 2008-11-06 03:15:04 - Beloved U.S. TV actress LISA RINNA has openly confessed to taking her beauty regime too far and becoming an over-injected Juvederm fanatic (Starplus.com 11-06-08).

She spoke to In Touch and confessed, We all know everyone does it." But, "You have to be careful. I'm a perfect example of that." (DMN 11-9-08).
Well, Lisa, not everyone does "it". At least not in my world.

Juvederm differs from Botox in that Juvederm is a volumizer where as Botox relaxes muscles in the brow to diminish the appearance of facial lines. (Dr. Stephen Greenburg)

Your skin is made of two layers, with supporting columns holding them apart. The area in-between includes the clear-jelly like substance Hyaluronic Acid. While young, the Hyaluronic acid is in abundance. As you grow older, the acid between these layers diminishes, and the skin somewhat caves, causing a wrinkle along the line. The wrinkle would be gone if you filled that area back up with the Hyaluronic Acid jelly-like substance. That's where Juvederm comes in.
(Resource)

According to the experts, when we reach 45 years old, we begin to lose our faces as we once knew them. By the time we are 50 most of supposedly have lost over half the hyaluronic acid we had as a child.

Facing Up To The Social Stats

  • In place of plastic surgery procedures such as face-lifts and eye-lifts, consumers have been moving toward less invasive injections in the name of youth and beauty.
  • In 2005, the global market for dermal fillers was $442 million (up 200% since 2000), with the U.S. dermal filler market projected to grow 25% a year through 2011, according to research supplied by Allergan.
  • Last year, 3.2 million Botox injections were administered--up 99% since Botox was approved for cosmetic application in 2002, the company says.
  • The company also says growth of non-surgical aesthetic procedures is outpacing surgical procedures by three to one--dermal fillers being third, behind Botox and electronic hair removal.
In laymen's terms for tightening the muscle/line with Botox, then softening or filling the area in with Juvederm. In fact, that combination therapy is something that many dermatologists have long been doing with Botox and Juvederm competitor Restylane. (New York Plastic Surgeon, Andrew Mark Klapper M.D.)

Face The Cost?

The average cost, according to Real Self.com, is about $686. According to the experts, you can expect when you are told you will only need another treatment in 6 mos, you will probably need it in 3 mos.

Doc Shop says the price is going to depend on where you live and your individual provider. They go on to say "...to treat smile lines around the lips, your dermatologist may require one or two syringes of Juvéderm®, costing approximately $450 to $600 per syringe. Finer lines—such as those immediately around the lip."

What's Your Face Worth To You?

  • Research says about 1 in 2000 experience side-effects.
  • Do you want to be that ONE?
  • Too, how much do we really know about these injections? Long term effects?
  • And how much is too much? In the many articles I read, I noticed that consumers of Juvederm, like Lisa, struggled with feeling like they didn't get enough. That they needed more. That their lips just didn't look big enough. It reminds me of anorexia. People with that disorder never think they are thin enough even to the point of death.

My View

Once again, I'm reporting with some what of a slant. I believe in taking care of ourselves, as you know. But are the synthetic updates on the face and body really going to keep us any younger?

And where are all the men? They are off playing or watching their fav sport. And I don't think it's looking at fake fat-lipped women, other than finding sport in it.

Truly, ladies, what are we going to pass on to this next generation? Bust-a-seam, I mean bust-esteem? Lip-esteem? Or strong self-esteem based on confidence from within?

You decide.

I Overdosed!

No, I'm not trying to be sexy, not hardly. Just thought you might want to see how I look when I OD. That is O.D. on vitamin D.
Need I say, OUCH?

With my fair skin, I had no business mowing four acres without greater covering.

Well, there were a few good things to come from it. I managed to not only run over weeds that were up to my waist, and the gas cap, the welcome mat (which flew in every direction, including my hubs =)), BUT a snake and a lizard. OK, so not all of those were a good thing.

I've been challenged with why in the world didn't I put sunscreen on? I responded, "Well, you don't plan when you O.D.!"

I'm not big on sunscreen anyway, but I should have had a long sleeved shirt on, not a tank top. The shirt would have protected me from flying objects, like the chunks of welcome mat as well as the debris that passersby toss out of their vehicles.

With lots of aloe, I'm now in recovery, though the process is ever so slow. For certain, Pilates will have to wait. Most of it anyway.
Have I learned my lesson? Sure. At least until next summer.

BTW, I failed the first three things Mayo recommends:
  • Avoid the sun during high intensity hours: I was out between 11-2.
  • Wear protective clothing. The evidence is in the pic.
  • Use sunscreen. I did have some on my face, thankfully, but I should have had on my wide brimmed hat.
Again, don't do as I do, but as I say. Take all the precautions to protect your skin. A little vitamin D goes a long way. Too much goes the wrong way. Be Smart!

Is The Doctor In?

Doc Visit Update
Many of you are calling, emailing and asking what were the results of my recent doc visit? Thanks for you continued interest. I'm thankful we can share and learn through our health challenges.

While my visit was not free of new discoveries, along with Doc suggesting that I have surgery, he was in agreement that I'm mostly in great condition. He acknowledged that I've been blessed with good health, and that I've been blessed to never have any surgeries. Thank the Lord! I've truly been protected over the years.

Have you caught up with me yet? Or are you still back there on...suggesting I have surgery? Anytime we hear knives sharpening, we wake up from our slumber, do we not?

To Knife Or Not To Knife
OK, OK, so why would he be suggesting surgery if there wasn't something terribly wrong? After all, you've heard me say he is VERY conservative.

First you have to know he is doing his job well. He would be amiss if he didn't suggest surgery with the info at hand. Remember when patients have 12-week size fibroids, most doctors insist on surgery, typically a hysterectomy.

As in anything, you have to look at the whole picture. Over all, I'm not having continued issues as many do with this challenge. I've had a few recently, but those have retreated. The typical symptoms? No. I've been fortunate. So do we just go on as though there isn't an issue to be addressed. Of course not.

I believe with my whole heart, besides God, that Pilates has spared me from suffering. Core strength is critical in situations like mine. Being in good physical condition is almost everything. And not being overweight is vital.

Of course, diet is everything as well. For example, I've heard repeatedly that red meat is not a good option if you have these types of tumors. So I rarely eat red meat. For that matter, meat, period, doesn't entice my cravings. I love veggies and fruit.

Many of you keep asking,
"What are the dangers of fibroids?" We've mentioned some of these concerns in previous articles, but as a quick review:
  • Extreme bleeding.
  • The bleeding may lead to anemia, which can be damaging and even fatal.
  • Pain from the pressure the fibroid may be putting on different organs.
  • Pain from cramping as well.
  • Prolapsed uterus.
  • Fatigue.
  • Bladder control due to the pressure of the fibroid.
  • In some cases, death, but that is usually when a person avoids a doctor's care and or they are bleeding past the point of life. By the way, the standard is if your flow is more than 6-8 pads a day, you may want to call your doctor.
So do I suffer from any of the above? No. The most I've experienced was the more than MY usual bleeding, and then only now and again.

Yet, it's not over yet. He reminded me that being a Caucasian female, who is slender in build sets me up for osteoporosis, which as he said, can be extremely detrimental to my health. My mother having it doesn't help the equation either. Yet, my generation has had the privilege of knowing better how to protect ourselves than my precious ma's generation.

My first thought when he and I discussed osteo was Pilates. I love the fact that the system offers a variety of weight bearing exercises.

Moving Right Along Into The Future
He believes women should consider a hormone replacement when the time comes. His idea, in my case, would be to use a very low dose birth control pill, and cutting the dosage in half, making it even weaker. I'm not saying I'm totally opposed to that, perhaps some day. However, I will have to do my research.

I know many of you are on various forms of hormone replacement. We each have to decide what we feel works best for our health. I'm certain, I will be exploring the natural route as always.

My Doctor: The Best
While I totally believe and trust my doc's judgment, what I truly appreciate is that he trusts my decisions. He gives me that room and is willing to work along side of me. I couldn't ask more! Sure, if it were life threatening, he certainly wouldn't be apathetic and say, "Well, Ellen, whatever you want." But the in between of very healthy and a health challenge, he has proven to respect my thoughts and wishes. Does he always like them? Of course not. But in the end, I know he is my partner.

For Now Our Plan Is:

  • To take it a page at a time.
  • For me to be in his office every 6 months and in between if I have any problems. I can do that.
  • And I'm to chart my daily body changes, if any. I was already doing that, so that's an easy follow-through.

So I'm good to go. And I'm feeling better than ever. Thanks for your concerns, your interest, and your prayers! Bless you.

I'm off for some core control exercises, then a dish of grapefruit, and then to a theater production a friend is taking me to for detoxing; it's a comedy.

May I Change Careers? Well, At Least The Job Description

Once again, I find myself in the minority with PMS symptoms. Cramping. However, in this case, NO cramping... in my menstrual career.

You see, ninety percent of teen girls suffer with fairly severe if not extreme severe cramping during their cycle. As many as fifty percent of women in general suffer with some type of cramping.

According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, roughly 52 percent of women in the United States between the ages of 15 to 51 suffer from some level of menstrual cramps. Of these, 10 percent have such a severe condition as to require a doctor visit. Statistics from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology reveal that menstrual cramping represents the number one cause of missed school and work days among women. In fact, menstrual cramping accounts for an astonishing 140 million hours of lost school and work every year. Fresh Patents.com

And, yes, I said career. Starting from a very early age, 11 to be exact, I have soared through my career without a glitch. That is until just a few years ago when the my trusted doc sounded an alarm. Now why would he do such a thing?

His Concern?
A fast-growing large fibroid tumor. Let's just leave out the rest of the details for now. I elected to stay the course of avoiding knives, instead using supplements and life style changes; it worked, for about six years! All the extreme bleeding ceased as well as any pain. By the way, the pain was not due to cramping. And I was able to sleep effortlessly through the night without waking up feeling pressure to dash to the potty! OK, so TMI? I doubt it. Hey, these are real life issues and remember my objective is to bring wellness to your front door. In this case, your screen-door!

Then yesterday came and impolitely changed my carefully orchestrated plan. Again, I'll spare you the graphics, other than saying...OUCH. Enter: Cramps defright.

Rewinding Six Years: The day I was jolted into finding out about this uninvited guest, I ran home to dig into my well of resources. What and why was this foreign object invading my body? What did I find?

Fibroids At A Glance
  • They are also known as uterine myomas.
  • No one REALLY knows why fibroids develop. Yes, there are theories. I feel there is a combination of dynamics that create fertile ground, as in most any health challenge.
  • The majority are benign. My doc told me in his 30+ years of practice, he'd only had maybe one case where the fibroid was cancerous.
  • About thirty percent of women have them.
  • They develop mostly in our late 30s and early 40s.
  • Many times they disappear after menopause. This and the previous note might suggest that estrogen has something to do with their uninvited habitations.
  • They are not always lone rangers; a person may have scores of fibroids.
  • African American Women are five times more likely to develop them than Caucasian women.
  • In some cases, they do "run" in families. Yes, my ma had them and at 45 had a partial hysterectomy. NOTE: This was immediately after the traumatic untimely death of my dad. Some call it "The Weeping Womb".
  • In close to half the cases, no symptoms surface and in many cases the person will not even be aware that they have them until the doc discovers them during a routine exam.
  • Unless the fibroid is large, typically a woman will have little or no trouble.
  • In some cases, there will be issues with extreme bleeding, break through bleeding, and cramping.
  • Other problems like anemia, and fatigue due to blood loss may develop.
  • Fibroids can develop wherever they choose along the interior muscular wall as well as the exterior of the uterus.
  • The cervix may house fibroids as well.
  • Depending on the location, they can cause discomfort and or pain. They can press on other organs causing pressure and pain and even block the urethra, causing kidney obstruction.
  • When a fibroid grows to a 12-week size, typically the doc will recommend a hysterectomy. However, 21st century doctors are not as quick to pull out the knife, but are searching for other methods to deal with the dilemma.

What Are Our Options?

  • The only way to truly cure them is a hysterectomy. About thirty percent of hysterectomies are performed to remove fibroids permanently.
  • Myomectomy is another type of surgery that leaves the females organs in place. Some choose this as they are still in child bearing years.

  • Ablation is the chosen method for some.

  • Hysteroscopy is prescribed by some doctors. Again, this is less invasive than a hysterectomy, but again, you will need to do extensive research as to whether this is the best method for you.

  • Uterine Fibroid Embolization This is a non-surgical new kid on the block. You might want to check it out as well. It does have its drawbacks as in any of these measures.

  • Hormone therapy, which I would caution you to research extensively before proceeding.
  • Some doctors prescribe taking the Pill and some are in hopes that RU 486 will find its way to our drug counters as a means to control the challenges with fibroids. Both of these, in my opinion, are risky as with most any med. They all have their side effects.

There are a number of books on fibroids you might want to check out. What Your Doctor May NOT Tell You About Fibroids by Goodwin and Broder. Sex, Lies, and The Truth About Uterine Fibroids by Dionne. Fibroids by Skilling. The First Year Fibroids by Skilling. Most of these may be found at Amazon as well as other bookstores. I can't give you a serious critique as I have not read them extensively, but what I have read, at least it will give you a start in exploring your options.

As Always We Should Never Forget Looking At A Natural Route

Speaking Of Natural Measures

I mentioned that the decision I made years ago was holistic. Many of you have inquired through the years what I did to have such great success. While I do believe spiritually God has everything taken care of, He has given me a mind and a will. OK, so we aren't going to debate the free will thing!

  • What I know is that I made a concerted effort to change my life style. I quit doing a man's job on my four acres. Well, I quit most of it.
  • I began a healthy diet of supplements.
  • I de-stressed.
  • I added Pilates to my life at maximum levels.
  • Then I made better attempts of eating more. You see, I can go forever and not eat. I know, I know, it's a little weird. But so goes my life.
  • Too, I must mention that I had been through a major life crisis when this lovely uninvited visitor arrived. I'm one of those who believe stress rips into our health.

Are There Any Warranties?

Besides the hysterectomy, none of these options guarantee that the fibroid (s) will not return. Research tells us that there is about a fifty percent chance that a new tumor will form later. Most of the women I have counseled with have reported that the fibroids indeed came back and many times even larger.

Too, it is reported that many of the surgical procedures recovery processes are more painful than a hysterectomy. Again, I have heard direct testimony to this from the many ladies I've coached through the years.

But for those who are still in child bearing years and want to conceive, what other choice do they have? Yes, there are meds available now that, again, do NOT cure fibroids, but may keep them at bay for a time. Resource: Prescription to Nutritional Healing 2nd edition. If you purchase this book, look for the 4th edition as I believe, it's the newest.

So Where Do I Go From Here?

To the doctor, where else? While I typically take the natural route, doctors play a huge role in diagnoses.

Wisdom clearly directs us to give qualified doctors opportunity to see if they can be a part of the discovery. Then what we do with their information is up to us. Unfortunately, I've had some ladies call looking for answers but refusing to go to the doctor. A few of those precious ladies ended up dead or near dead in ER with an emergency hysterectomy.

In the meantime, I'm chilling out, taking quality supplements, abandoning stress as much as I'll allow. Exercising. Comforting myself by using the Pilates Shell Stretch (love it). Now for the last thing, brace yourself: Sipping on some raw apple cider vinegar. I only use Braggs. Oh, and asking my hub to bring me some food! hee hee!

I'll keep you posted.

Biker Gal Says, Look Out Lance!

My goal in buying a bike was to find something around $100. I know, I know, I may regret that decision. But for now, it will have to do.

After I discover whether this is something I truly want to add to my exercise diet, I may upgrade. Look out Lance!

My son thought I should get a
retro bike. You know, the ones that look like the 1950s. I found a Schwinn that was awesome and reasonably priced, but it didn't get the final vote.

While I liked the retro bikes, I was drawn to an off-road bike. Being that we don't live in the city, I knew my travels would entail more than a fluid ride down a comfortable side walk.

Besides, I liked the colors. You guessed it: Pink and white (photo). Isn't that a priority when buying something you are going to be wearing?

When my hub got home, I told him I had a surprise to show him, so we took a walk on the outside. There sat my newest item of interest on my journey to health. He looked it over closely. I had warned him not to scrutinize. He said, "Well, what are you going to do with it???"

OK, moving right along, trying not to read between the lines, I responded, "Well, I'm going to RIDE it!"

So those are my plans.

Warnings In The Manual
The next day, I decided to read the manual. You can imagine the stress levels that ignited. So much health. Actually, it wasn't too bad, until I stumbled upon one statement:
  • Rules Of The Road And Safety Tips: #4 PROP 65 WARNING. This product may contain chemicals that are known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and other reproductive harm.

Lovely.

So we can't even ride or purchase a bike without toxic exposure to the very thing we are trying to protect, our wellness?

I began to do my research on Prop 65. Yes, we all know Cali is known for setting stringent safety standards, but I can live with that.

Here's What I Found:

Click here for Prop 65 info.

I set out to find what questionable chemicals were supposed to be in my bike. The OEHHA(Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment)site noted that you needed to contact the company you purchased the item from if you want to know expressively what chemicals of concern are involved.

OK, I could do that. I found the 800 number. Called. Not only was there no answer, there was no recording.

Wow. I dialed again just to make sure I had done so correctly, only to find the same untidy results. As I looked a little closer, I found that the company is the supplier to the name brand. Imported from China.

The actual company that distributes the bike, at least, had a recording, but there was no answer as it was a holiday. So I sent an email with my questions. I was prepared for no response, and if there was one, I was certain it would be tardy.

As the consumer, I could only hope to find why the warning? Was I concerned? Not really. But therein may be the problem. Too many of us don't worry. I think perhaps it's because we are inundated with toxin warnings, creating apathy.

UPDATE
I received a nice email with a number to call. Made the call. The customer service person, Jon, told me I would have to call the "other" company that makes these bikes since mine didn't match with theirs. OK. He informed me that there are two companies that sell this bike.

I called the other company. The service person said I needed to call the "other" company since my model # didn't match theirs. Hummm.

Inquisitively, I said, "I just called them. They told me to call you. So are you suggesting I call them back and tell them that you told me to call them back?" Weird stuff, folks.

She stumbled around and said, "Let's see, well, turn the bike upside down and tell me what the number is." And why didn't she ask me to do this in the first place? Oh, yeah, I forgot, this is customer service.

Indeed, it was their bike. So I asked her about Prop 65. She was clueless, but said she'd ask her supervisor. I waited. She came back with some jargon that, "Those California people are just nutty..." OK, I get that, but I wanted to know what danger was inscribed on my bike.

"It's in the paint" she said. But that's all she knew, other than it could be a micro amount. Regardless, if they sell to Cali, the company has to list the warning. I understood that. So I told her, I'd probably not be gnawing on it any time soon. She suggested I not sleep with it either. At this point, we were laughing as we made our point.

So What's the Biker Gal To Do?

Truth is, I'm exposed to more toxins the minute I get in my car than sitting on that bike.

Nothing comes free anymore. Nothing that is, that's truly green and clean. Not even exercise in the open fresh air...

Did I tell you about the air pollution concern in my area? Oh my...so the endless pit of toxins greets us everyday, everywhere.

Where's my antioxidant?

Note: Some people believe wooden bikes have fewer toxic issues. What of wooden bikes, click here? Check out this site as well.

The Raw Facts

Cookie Dough, Anyone?
We've all heard the e.coli scare, in everything from peanut butter, meat, tomatoes, to spinach, but now, cookie dough?

OK, so does that mean I can't eat raw cookie dough anymore?

According to an article Dr. Marion Nestle wrote addressing the issue, "the tally has reached 66 victims in 28 states: 25 hospitalizations, 7 with severe complications, no deaths." (06/19/09) The victims were mostly young and female. According to the experts, that simply means children at home with their moms are the most exposed. Well, duh. Sorry.

Unfortunately, we lose even the good with the bad. In order to get rid of a minuscule, the government requires that mega more be destroyed, as they would call it, protection. The perfect example: Nestle recalled over 300,ooo cases of their cookie dough (as of mid June). Obviously, not all of the packages were contaminated.

Just this morn on a news reporting radio station, they were interviewing a list of prof on the matter. The quandary: What is the source of the problem? You may not know that the ingredient, if you will, causing the problem, is not just ecoli, but E. coli D 0157:H7. You can read more info on the following site.

What the experts are saying is, they don't know exactly how E. coli D 0157:H7 was birthed into the cookie dough. They don't believe it's from the eggs, after all, eggs are supposed to be pasteurized. Regardless, eggs don't carry this "brand" of e.coli, but cow manure does. Tasty. What flavor of cookies would that be? Doolicious. Shoolicious? Fecielicious? Crapolicious? Stinkolicious? OK, OK, give it up, L!

Seriously, the alarm is that this particular e.coli is slightly more potent. E. coli D 0157:H7 is supposed to be more harmful, even damaging the kidneys.

The other concern is that D 0157:H7 in the cookies can be spread from counter to counter, item to item, causing more health issues.

A caller on the program asked if people are just really that stupid...to eat it raw? Hey, she's talking about me!

Also, the question was posed if there was enough warning on the products? The Nestle warning or suggestion says, "Cookie dough contains raw ingredients. Bake before consuming." Market Pantry's caution is a little more demanding: Do not eat unbaked cookie dough..." Let's see if Nestle follows suit.

Click here to see which Nestle cookies you should return.
I checked mine, and all is good. I guess I should go back to making them from scratch? By the way, Nestle voluntarily gave the recall for their products. Good for them.

All this is making me hungry for...COOKIES! There is nothing like a delish cookie, straight off my Pampered Chef Stone, just ask my son's friends! I like mine a little more on the doughy side, while the guys like them brown and crunchy. So, there you go, another female at higher risk.

So am I going to quit eating cookie dough? No. No more than I'm going to quit licking the bowl after I mix up a cake and put it in a pan. I've done it for XX years, do you really think I'm going to stop now? I have greater concerns to address like...

The Ride of Your Life

Recently, I decided to purchase a bike. With two wheels. And no motor!
Perhaps this was prompted by my decision to purchase a bike for my grand daughter who was turning three. As with my children, I wanted her to be exposed to a bike early on.

My oldest daughter learned at five years old. She learned quickly. I can still see her on that pink banana seat Huffy riding around and around on the back patio and front driveway.

My son's bike arrived when he was five. However, he decided he didn't care if he ever learned to ride. This was after a few failed attempts with his dad as a teacher. Case and point: Not everyone was created to be an instructor.

Not willing to accept this faulty excuse, I quietly responded, "Well, here's the deal, Son, you are going to learn. Then if you choose to never ride again, that's your choice." What else are parents for than to see the bigger picture?

Dragging his feet, that very day we went to the backyard. Yes, yard, with all of it's lumps and bumps.

  • The first thing I did was remove the training wheels. Those are just hindrances, in my opinion.

  • The next step: A few runs with me along side of him, holding him up as we dashed across the yard.

  • Followed by starting him off with me by his side and then letting him go on his own. Yes, he tumbled and fell. See, cushy grass does come in handy.

  • He was not happy. That's OK. I can deal with unhappiness. So without much choice, he knew this parent was not going to let him give up.

  • Back to the track, to his dismay. Little did he know the best was just minutes away from his reach.

  • An hour or so later, he was experiencing what it felt like to balance himself without any crutch on his new mode of transportation. Let freedom ring!

  • From that day forward, he recounted his earlier decision: He updated to riding a bike the rest of his life.

The really neat thing is that not only did he learn to ride, but the greater lesson was about life: Never give up on something you think you can't do. I can't tell you the times when he's come up against a challenge bigger than life, and all I've had to do is say, "Remember the bike." With that simple phrase, he knew the bumps and bruises would only prove to soon be badges of success.

But what determined me with such passion for my children? For one, I never was given the opportunity to learn to ride a bike. My parents didn't teach me. Not that they were being neglectful. I'm not certain about my dad, but I know my mom never learned how to ride a bike. And my older brothers thought I was too delicate to be involved in such activities.

So at the ripe age of almost 12, I borrowed a neighbor's bike and set out to teach myself in the front yard. Looking back, picking the back yard might have been a better choice. I'm certain my neighbors were provided free entertainment, at my own expense. I never knew it, but then I wouldn't have cared. My passion to become one with the bike took over any sense of pride.

NEXT POST: What bike did I choose? What alarming news I discovered once I purchased the bike.

Here's Ed!!!!!!!!

We've all been disturbed concerning the tragic news of untimely deaths this week. Michael Jackson and Farah Fawcett.

But did anyone notice Ed McMahon died earlier this week, a more normal death, and has been given little attention? By the way, did you know he was a decorated Marine fighter pilot in WWII as well as the Korean War? I'd say that should have made headlines over all the "other" hoopla. Sorry, folks, I do struggle with our value system.

For a delightful interview with Ed, click here.

We Are Celebrity Junkies, For Sure.
Do you ever question why? Do we not have enough to do with our time? Do we not have enough heroes and heroines in our own lives to applaud and be interested in? Think about it.

But on a little different note...

What's The Healthy Side?
The following article was sent to me by a friend, and it seemed appropriate to share on this forum. We are looking to find ways to be well, not temporary chronic solutions for our illnesses, are we not? With that as a backdrop, it makes healthy sense to look into alternatives.

While I may not agree with every alternative available, I would be foolish to dismiss the possibilities of finding other ways to be well. Other ways than completely trusting my life to legal toxic drugs given by the medical industry. Notice, I said completely.

Up front, I do believe we need doctors. I just don't believe it's wise to blindly deliver our lives into the hands of an industry that is proving it's more about treating symptoms than providing cures. Wake up, America!

NaturalNews Reports
That Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett both died in the last 8 hours is shocking news to many, but it's not nearly as surprising as the fact that they were both killed by Big Pharma's toxic drugs.

Michael Jackson, we now know, died from an injection of Demerol given by his doctor -- a man who is now the subject of an LAPD manhunt. There is little question that the injection of Demerol -- a potent pharmaceutical -- caused Jackson's death. Chalk it up to yet another tragic loss of a hugely inspiring artist who has become a victim of the pharmaceutical industry and overzealous medical doctors.

Demerol, by the way, is a highly-potent opioid drug that's also highly addictive. And yet it's being prescribed (and injected) by doctors with the full support of the FDA, the pharmaceutical industry and the conventional medical community. It is nothing less than amazing that mild drugs like marijuana remain outlawed while potentially deadly painkiller drugs like Demerol are openly injected into people by doctors.

Farrah Fawcett's death was far less sudden than Jackson's, but no less innocent. She was killed by chemotherapy -- a toxic cocktail of chemicals pushed onto patients by oncologists who deceptively call it "treatment."

Against the advice of many in the natural health community, Fawcett gave in to her doctors and agreed to be poisoned as a treatment for anal cancer. But what she didn't know is that one of the most common side effects of chemotherapy is more cancer! And after subjecting her body to more chemotherapy, it wasn't long before Fawcett was diagnosed with liver cancer. (Chemotherapy causes terrible harm to the liver, heart, kidneys and brain...)

Before long, her suppressed immune system and ongoing poison treatments overcame her body's natural healing ability, and she died (as yet another victim of chemotherapy). Her doctors, of course, claim she "died of cancer." Clever huh?

Cancer doctors operate with that sort of clever deception: If the cancer goes away, they claim the patient was "treated by the medicine," but if the patient dies, they claim "the cancer killed them." It's pretty easy to claim success if you take credit for the wins while fleeing the any responsibility for the losses.

Back to Farrah, while many of her friends and supporters say her battle with cancer was "an inspiration," let me be the first to publicly state that to me, poisoning yourself with toxic chemicals is NOT inspiring, no matter how much suffering you go through. I do not believe that people should be given special recognition for pain and suffering they consciously choose to inflict upon themselves, especially when all that suffering is easily avoidable. It would have been far more "inspiring" for Farrah to choose healing remedies instead of deadly poisons.

Had she chosen natural remedies, she could have skipped all the pain and suffering, restored her immune function, reversed her cancer and gone on to live a much longer and more abundant life. (It would have saved her a small fortune in medical costs, too...)

But she didn't choose natural health (nutrition, vitamin D, immune support, superfoods and medicinal herbs). Instead, she chose poison. As a result, her decision to ravage her body's health through "slash and burn" medicine ultimately cost more than her body could afford to pay.

Keeping the public in the dark
What's especially sad about all this is that the conventional medical trade groups, the drug companies and the FDA are all conspiring to keep consumers ignorant of natural cancer remedies. So Farrah Fawcett almost certainly did not have easy access to the kind of information about natural remedies that could have saved her life. She would have had to read NaturalNews or other good sources of truthful information about natural solutions for cancer like Gerson Therapy (www.Gerson.org).

But this is all by design: Truthful information about natural remedies for cancer is intentionally oppressed by the medical establishment. Those who dare to offer health products with accurate descriptions about their anti-cancer attributes are threatened with arrest and imprisonment by the FDA and FTC (http://www.naturalnews.com/024246_cancer_the_FTC_cancer_industry.html...). The very best doctors who can really cure cancer have been either thrown in prison or run out of the country (which is why all the best cancer clinics in the world aren't located in the United States).

The medical industrial complex, in other words, has conspired to keep the American people uninformed and diseased, making them dependent on the for-profit medical system that dominates modern medicine. That Farrah Fawcett actually made a conscious decision to allow her body to be destroyed by chemotherapy is an indication of just how insidious and manipulative our conventional medical system really is.

Instead of giving patients options, it limits their options and gives them death. Instead of educating patients about how to prevent and reverse cancer, our medical system de-educates patients and seeks to isolate them from knowledge of natural remedies. Instead of empowering patients, it seeks to control and profit from patients. It is a failed system that kills celebrities just as mercilessly as it kills those who aren't famous at all.

And unless we change our approach to healing cancer, more people will continue to die as victims of dangerous prescription drugs and failed chemotherapy "treatments."

Because whether you're famous or not, chemotherapy is still poison.

My Thoughts:
This is by no means a slam on FF and MJ. They both provided a wealth of entertainment and talent since the 70s. I grew up with them. I enjoyed watching them as much as anyone.

MJ
While I understand MJ's pain from having an abusive father (those are the accusations), many of you have had similar stories and worse, but you didn't choose to go the route he did. He did choose.

I lost respect when he was repeatedly in trouble for making young boys his unhealthy attraction. He needed therapy, and he chose not to spend his money on mental health. I can over look a lot of things with celebrities and their vices, but not this one. I just can't. If Joe Smith down the street had this issue, we would paint neon signs around his house saying, "Keep Away, Child Molester". Let's not have a double standard. Let's call it for what it is.

MJ had problems and needed help. But he clearly had the control to do as he pleased. He made it crystal from the words he left on his album, "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my
soul."

FF
I don't need to speak for Farah's life, it speaks for itself. Concerning NN's article: While I agree with most of it, I would say that I do believe she did begin to search for alternatives to cure her cancer, but was a little too late.

I, like NN, don't see her dying videos as overwhelmingly inspirational. Maybe she did do them to help others. Only God knows that and whether the ones around her were truly in it for the purest of reasons. I would hope so. But inspiration for me is found right in our own neighborhoods, our churches, our schools, our communities. Let's begin to look there first.

Faves: Ed MaMahon: Playing the side-kick on The Johnny Carson Show and doing it with finesse.
FF: The Burning Bed
MJ: Farewell My Summer Love - Listen to the video below. You may need to turn off my playlist at the bottom of this page first.
