So How Are Your Drugs Working 4 U?

A few things to consider when you are trying to unveil a health issue.

Most of us dive to the doc. Say 90% or more?

That's not necessarily a bad thing. But I would recommend a few things in doing so. Before I do, let's take a look at a few things.

A REAL LIFE STORY:
Recently someone (aka Mary) shared a sobering story with me. She recently came up against an alarming health issue with a dear family member (severe depression). The doc prescribed a high dosage of med, to which the side affects were not functional for daily life.

Not feeling comfortable with the doc's reasoning, Mary sought out other resources. By the way, not before the doctor insulted Mary. Mary, you see, had been doing her job and was asking LOTS of questions. The doctor suggested that because of her inquiries Mary was being too nervous and needed medication herself. Huh?

Then the doctor went on to say, "I feel sorry for you husband." Why? She said because he had to live with Mary. Are you shocked? Amazing. Mary's deafening silence and shocked look hushed the doctor. She was asking for a law suit, if you ask me. True lack of professionalism.

Mary sought a second opinion (good 4 her) from a doc in a different field. This doctor clearly felt the med dosage was way too high. They reduced the med. This would be a longer process than slam dunking a strong dosage for quick results, but providing better life functions.

Though it helped, there were still compromising effects.

Mary continued to look into other avenues of what was indeed going on. Upon further study, she discovered that the med her family member had taken for an overseas trip to prevent Malaria could be part of the problem. Its known side-effect can cause depression. She went back to the doc with this info to which the doc responded with, YES, she had seen these types of cases. What to do now? The damage had been done.

All that to say, why weren't these types of questions asked by the docs? Like had the patient been on any med in the last 6 mos? Under any undue stress? To which they would have found a well of answers to the whys of the debilitating depression. And if they had asked the right questions in the first place, she would have never been put on the malaria Rx, or I would like to think so. For you see, had they asked, they would have found she had experienced depression in the distant past. Meaning, she was even more suseptible.

Which leads me to the three questions Dr. Jerome Groopman, who is the author of How Doctors Think, challenges US to ask doctors when we are searching for a diagnosis.
  1. What else could my illness be?

  2. Could two things be going on to explain my symptoms?

  3. Is there anything my history, physical examination, laboratory findings, or other tests that seems to NOT fit with your working diagnosis?

Dr. Groopman says that mostly it's not the technical problems but the mind of the doc that causes the misdiagnosis.

I say, too, it's what the patient decides who and what they are going to turn their lives and health over to, without question.

It's not even fair to put doctors in the same house as God. Most of them are trying to do us a service. WE are at fault as well. WE acquiesce. WE put them on pedestals. Our parents did. NOW is the time for change.

Stats and Research:

  • Medical misdiagnosis is not rare; 15% of all patients are misdiagnosed.

  • Research says about 8% encounter serious results, even death. All because of error, neglectful or not. Do you want to be that one of the 7-15 out of the 100?

  • Research show that a doctor is likely to interrupt a patient 18 seconds within the beginning of the interview. Ever had that experience? uh-huh. Time to get a new doc.

  • Accidental death caused by patients improperly taking meds soared over 700% from 1983-2004.

  • The greatest increase in deaths was with people in their 40-50s; 890%. That's alarming. The cause? Lack of understanding on how to take the meds. What to take them with and not. Mixing drugs with alcohol, and street drugs are causative. As well as mixing Rx drugs. Doctors need to step up a level with communicating this to their patients.

  • Painkillers rank at the top as the Rx most often mixed, causing death.

  • Now that potent drugs are finding their way to store shelves, the heavier the responsibility rests on the consumer to know HOW to take OTC (over-the-counter) drugs. This in itself is causing serious problems in the wellness industry.

Groopman says he believes there are three variables that cause a doctor to misdiagnose.

  1. Anchoring. Meaning they have the tendency to grab on to the first symptom, physical finding, or lab abnormality and make their diagnosis off of that. Therefore, not looking at ALL of the variables in the person's life.

  2. Availability. Like in anything we tend to grab the last case we experienced and attach it to the current situation. Counselors have been plagued with this for years. Doctors as well.

  3. Attribution. A doc may stereotype a person, example the elderly, then they attribute symptoms to that "type". Women are locked into certain stereotypes as well. Many have died because doctors were not as aggressive in their treatment as they were with men. EX: a woman is often seen as having emotional issues when she states she is having pain in her chest, left arm, and or upper back; whereas a man is immediately treated as though he may be having a heart attack. Too, I have seen women who were clearly showing every symptom of having a stroke and yet the treatment comes in the form of questions like, "Are you having anxiety over something?" Heck yes, Y-O-U!!!!!!

NOTE: In this particular case, I was present. I had no problem advocating with, "NO, they are having a stroke." And indeed they were.

A Personal Example To #3:

My mother fell, hit her back, and after a couple of days of pain, that wasn't going away, I took her to the doc. She was x-rayed. Her doc couldn't find anything from her observation. She gave her pain med, and told me to look for Shingles .

Huh?, I asked. The look I got was like, well never mind. I was told to watch for Shingles cause that was probably why she was in such pain. And that it had nothing to do with the fall. She also suggested it was all in my mother's head. You've got to be kidding me. Sorry folks, it was NOT in her head but in her body. Though I contended the diagnosis, I was clearly corrected by the x-pert. After all, what do caretakers know?

Guess what? Shingles NEVER showed up. And it took about two-weeks for her internal bruising to heal. That simple. And the pain meds only made her sleepy...didn't take away the pain...just sick.

Groopman says that some docs have a negative attitude toward certain populations therefore causing misdiagnosis. He cites a case where an elderly lady was suffering memory loss. The doc said she was senile. Her family pursued, thank God, and found she had anemia. And with a supplement of vit B-12, the doctor's diagnosis of senility quickly left. Hummmm.

What To Do?

GET PROACTIVE. Be responsible for your own life and for those you take care of. Worry more about the possible life issue at hand than being afraid of confronting the doctor OR nurse.

Who knows your body more than you do? Certainly not a doctor or nurse who sees you once in a poka-dot moon. Yes, they are xperts. But so are YOU. Get a grip on that before you so readily jump ship and into their boat of drugs % diagnoses. Think. Question. Think some more. And question more. Seek other options. Seek other sound advice. I said sound.

I'm not telling you to ignore what a good doctor has to share. But a good doctor will invite you into the diagnosis in some form or fashion. He will ask you questions, and he won't interrupt.

By the way, the next time that happens, YOU interrupt him, and walk out.

Let's Have An Autoimmune Cell 2 Cell Chat

In the Did You Know? section on the side-bar, we have been highlighting autoimmune diseases. With that in mind, I thought I'd share in part this quote from DeLisa Fairweather* and Noel R. Rose**Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA

Autoimmune disease occurs when a response against a self-antigen(s)
involving T cells, B cells, or autoantibodies induces injury systemically or
against a particular organ. Understanding of autoimmune diseases is hindered by
the fact that some level of autoimmunity, in the form of naturally occurring
autoantibodies and self-reactive T and B cells, is present in all normal
persons. Thus, on a proportional basis, developing autoimmune disease is the
relatively uncommon consequence of a common autoimmune response. Although an
autoimmune response occurs in most persons, clinically relevant autoimmune
disease develops only in susceptible persons.

Let's Talk Cell 2 Cell
More simply put? AD is when your body is fighting against itself. How so?

Our bodies communicate via our 10 trillion cells, give or take a few! Estimations vary. Some say more. But if you placed them end-2-end, they would stretch around our earth 47 times. Our cellular system is purely Divine.

Cells actually communicate? Yes. Like in relationships, communication is either effective or ineffective. Take Venus-Mars talk. You know, between women and men! What happens when communication breaks down in our intimate relationships? Well, one of a couple of things. We either find the answer to our misunderstandings and prosper to better times, or we continue the fight until we self destruct; crash and burn; total destruction. Our bodies are not so different.

They, like we in relationships, were made to work well together. Proper cell communication offers a healthy body, like good communication skills makes for a healthy relationship.

However, enter an untreated misunderstanding; it will be fertile ground for breakdown.

We all know that relationships are probably the hardest thing on the planet to maintain. I suppose our cellular communication may be as well.

Often, I've thought of human cellular talk like cell phones. If I have AT&T and you have it, we call and our systems recognize each other, costing us zilch. However, if I call Verizon, the call may go through, but the systems will not purely connect. End result? A price will be paid!!!!

Too, think of proper cellular communication as: In a good situation, your good cells are fighting bad cells to win the battle for your wellness. However, if your good cells get confused (due to variables like toxins), they will begin to join ranks with the bad cells. Why? They can't identify which are the good or bad guys. They will actually begin to attack other good cells; their fellow soldiers. Friendly-fire, which as we know can be deadly.

Are Autoimmune Diseases A Contemporary Condition?
No, they were first noted in the medical field over a century ago. At that time researchers began to associate them with viral and bacterial infections. While research is still pondering infections as being a cause, they have extended their thoughts that it may as well be related to genetic factors.

Let's Take A Look At Some Stats and Research:

  • According to Johns Hopkins University, autoimmune diseases affect 8% of our population.

  • Women are the most likely to have an A.D, which is a definite unifying theme in research.

  • It's estimated that a conservative 6.7 million or 78.8% of the persons with autoimmune diseases are women.

  • It's ranked the third most common condition in the nation only behind cancer and heart attacks.

  • Out of 14-22 million people, about 5-8% are known to have this condition.

  • A.D. is not limited to one part of the body. The endocrine system, connective tissue, gastrointestinal tract, heart, skin, and kidneys are all at risk.

  • While 15 diseases are known to be the direct result of an autoimmune response, circumstantial evidence implicates 80 conditions with autoimmunity.

  • These diseases tend to cluster in families and in individuals.

  • A person with one autoimmune disease is more likely to get another, indicating that common mechanisms are involved in disease susceptibility.

  • Autoimmune response occurs in most persons, but clinically relevant autoimmune disease develops only in susceptible persons.

  • Research seems to conclude that there is no absolute conclusion that AD is infectious, though it seems likely as one of the possibilities.
  • For more detail, it would be best for you to read the research offered by Johns Hopkins.

What Can We Do?

Obviously, we are on a journey, and it doesn't sound like it's going to be over any time soon. But I'd like to believe we are getting closer. After all, we've already traveled a bazillion miles over these last 100+ trying to make sense of this sometimes debilitating condition. And just when we discover an important piece of information, another AD arrives on the scene throwing a wrench in our theories.

Is there an end in sight? Maybe not. Regardless, we are blessed with avenues like in no other time that can create a better scenario in defeating these invasions upon our bodies.

We do have options. I'm not diminishing the challenges some face with AD, but rather I'm trying to give hope. Hope that we can continue to stay the course and find answers even outside of the medical field.

  • For sure, we need to detox our bodies as much as we can.
  • Watch what you put IN your bodies be it water, food, drugs, whatever.
  • Watch what you breathe, when possible. No, I'm not going to wear a mask just yet, except when I mow the lawn. A quality air-filter might not be a bad idea.
  • Quit using toxic chemical cleaners. Try using natural ingredients more often.
  • De-stress yourself. Chill out more often. MAKE time for yourself.
  • Exercise and release toxins. Remember Pilates is an excellent source!
  • All these and more will create a fertile environment for healthier cell talk.

No, I don't mean on your cell phone. Speaking of which, is a whole other health matter!!!! oh no!!!

How'd We Get So Lost in the 21st Century?

Yesterday I was reminded how we must sound to our children. My husband and I were discussing how late college kids go to bed. My son's roommate kept him awake the other night til 3 a.m. ! No, it wasn't from snoring. But from clicking away on the keyboard. My son said, "Well, at least when I do that, I have the courtesy to go into the other room." Fun Times. Just wait until he gets married. Oh my.

OK, back to my point. My husband said, "Well, when I was in college......" And I thought, Yeah and how many many, many, eons ago was that?! That was then, this is now.

"Welcome to the 21st century," I hear out kiddos saying with eyes rolling to the back of their heads.

Hubby may not be on target with when he thinks kids are supposed to go to bed. Afterall, he went to bed...9-10 or some odd hour like that. Even I never did that in college. However, no, we weren't kept awake by our roommate's "clicking"...well except maybe the clicking of their teeth. Thank God for mouth-guards!

All that to say, there are definite differences in the good old daze and today. Which are the best to have grown up in? You decide.

  • THEN: We ate wild blueberries in the woods. And they didn't need to be washed.
  • NOW: They eat Lunchables, which are made of questionable ingredients.
  • THEN: We climbed trees, while enjoying the fresh air.
  • NOW: They get allergy tests.
  • THEN: We walked with our pals along train tracks or thru' the neighborhood.
  • NOW: They walk with parents on a leash in the nearest mall.
  • THEN: We played Stickball, Kick-The-Can, or Hop-Scotch (no, that's not liquor).
  • NOW: They play XBOX.
  • THEN: We heard, "Be home by dark!"
  • NOW: They hear, "Answer your cell when I call you!"
  • THEN: We went to summer camp.
  • NOW: Fat Camp
  • THEN: We did cannonballs off the hi-dive.
  • NOW: They play Maro-Polo in the new shallow play pools.
  • THEN: We had many a skinned knee, bruised rear, and bloody nose.
  • NOW: Carpal tunnel at age 4.
  • THEN: We played Jacks.
  • NOW: Who's Jack and how'd U play him/her?

Let's get lost in the 50s tonight....just for a few seconds to detox from the 21st century. If you'd like, you can scroll down to the PlayList, and find the old song Lost In The 50s Tonight for a bit of nostalgia. Fun Times! And all free: of calories and toxins.

Is This Diet 4 U Or For The Rats???

More times than not are we not duped into believing the word "diet" on a food product means a path to thinness or at best a little less fat hanging off the sides of our bodies? Without question.

But what are we really losing here? Weight? I think not. More than likely, we are losing momentum on ridding ourselves of the added weight by depending on "diet" products. For one, they usually are wreaking with synthetics. Big NO-NO.

You can't trick the body. If you try, the body will begin to fight against itself. And therein you are asking for more trouble. It's called autoimmune diseases. Am I saying diet products cause AD? No, I'm not laying claims to anything. But we need to consider what we are doing to our bodies all in the name of trying to look like the airbrushed images sprayed across every mag we see. Are we willing to sacrifice our health for a look, that is not likely to happen anyway? Probably.

Let's just take a look at the following quote:

Artificial Sweeteners. Surprising news for people trying to stay slim: New
research suggests that even noncaloric sugar substitutes, whether “natural” or
artificial, may contribute to weight gain. Researchers at Purdue University
published a study in February showing that rats gained weight when fed foods
artificially sweetened with saccharin. The researchers speculated that when the
sweet taste of the sugar substitute wasn’t followed by lots of calories, it
threw off the rats’ response to calories in general. As a result, they ate more
food. Although this response doesn’t necessarily apply to humans, many dieters
find that after eating sugar-free food, they compensate by indulging in other
calorie-rich sweets.
Note, "it threw off the rats' response to calories in general." Meaning? Is this not an example of the body getting confused? Regardless, if it's a rat or not. The human cellular system was not designed to be tricked.

I've yet to see people truly respond favorably in losing weight by using diet products. When I say favorably, I mean with long term results to a leaner healthier body. Healthy. Remember, you can be thin and unhealthy.

So what to do? Be responsible. Quit depending on diet products. Rather feed your body organic healthy foods, smaller doses, and get out and exercise (maybe Pilates!). Make it a lifetime commitment. It will change your life.

Sambazon News

I received a nice email from Sambazon. I'm going to connect with them in the next few days over a cup of Acai ! Well, that might be a little hard considering they are on the other end of the country.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to what that have to share about their company so I can report to you!

I'm out of pocket all day tomorrow, so I'll see you Friday. Don't be late!

Trading One Roll For Another!

The Pilates Roll-UP.

Find yourself a quiet spot with or without a splash of music. Use a well cushioned mat. Preferably in front of or on the side of a mirror. Pay attention to the movement of your body, not how your make-up looks! You'll have time for that later when you are looking Pilates good and ready to go out on the town.

This may take a few attempts or more to "get it." This is one of the best yet can be one of the hardest movements to perform accurately, so don't feel alone if you struggle. As always, I would highly recommend you take private sessions with a qualified Pilates instructor. He or she will be able to guide you through the steps that will be the most conducive to your body type.  *And always use the 5 Principles of Alignment as well as the Principles of Pilates. (Note: side-bar)
  • To Prepare: In a seated position, get upright on your sitz bones (those two little bones you can feel when you rock your tush from side to side), lifting up nice and tall as though someone is pulling you up from the top of your head, with knees bent and hands just lightly under your legs as you see in pic. Feet on floor.
  • Take a deep breath in through your nose, as you begin to draw your waist in like a girdle is wrapped around you, as you exhale you should feel your deep tummy muscles (TVA) ignite! Yes, ignite. Don't worry, you won't explode!
  • Lift up from the pelvic floor as you engage your core and exhale (like kegel exercise).
  • Now inhale and as you exhale begin to roll down SLOWLY. Roll down as in vertebra by vertebra, as best as you can. Without allowing your belly to pop out. Big no-no. Keep it tucked.
  • You are not leaning back, you are ROLLING as the name suggests. You initiate from your core.
  • Make sure to keep your head with your spine. Let it travel with you, not before or after you; it's not in the lead.
  • As you return, let your head again follow, making sure it's not taking off ahead of you.
  • This isn't about letting your head do the work. Only what's in your head...your brain! Notice how her head travels with her in the movement?
  • Only go back as far as you can maintain control. If you belly begins to pop, stop and begin to roll back up. Or if you begin to wobble, stop and regain balance.
  • When you find where your "spot" or Range Of Motion (ROM) is, then begin again, only this time with fluidity.
  • Inhale to prepare, as you exhale roll back within your ROM. Stop. Inhale. Exhale and begin to roll slowly back up to the top and on top of your sitz bones.
  • If you notice, she is keeping her hands under her legs. This keeps your balance and precision under control. NOTICE: Your hands are not to grip your legs. She's not using her hands as a tool to pull her up. She IS using her core to aid her.
  • Once you find your range and balance, repeat 7-10 times a few times a day.
NOTE: Hands under legs is just one way to perform the exercise. As you advance, you can (and I do) keep my arms extended out in front of me while I perform this movement, allowing my arms to stay fluid, in sync, with my body flowing back and down, and up and forward. Make sure you don't let your ribs pop if you are able to go all the way flat to the floor, with arms overhead and back, as though you are one long line stretched out. ___________

***Modifications help us as we are graduating into more advanced work. You will still get a great work out with benefits without damaging your body.
***Roll-ups have been noted for being a #1 choice in working your abs and getting results. But in order to gain that status you will have to put it on your schedule and your body!

CAUTION: As always exercise only after you have been released to do so by a trusted health professional.Copyright © 2008-2012 by Pilates Worx 4 Life. All rights reserved.

ACAI, ACAI, ACAI

Acai Update
Jamba Juice contacted me yesterday as promised. 100 pts for them! FYI, they have fantastic customer service. The process by which they bring the Acai to the U.S. is basically the same as the rest. They, too, as I thought, flash-pasteurize. They asked how I felt about that? Too, I was pleased to hear that they ship all their juices to the store frozen, to be thawed in the frig. But the greater news is the shelf life of the Acai juice is only one day. OK, where is my Jamba Card????

I have not heard back from O.N.E. Amazon Acai. I read that they ship directly from the Amazon unlike other companies. I'm not sure what that means or that it's true.

Suga' Or Not?
On a content issue, I discovered. O.N.E. Amazon Acai has 29 sugars in their drink. They say it's because of the tart nature of the Acai. I agree, Acai is tart. But 29 sugars in an 11 oz. natural drink? That's the norm. Gotta tickle the American tongue. They do use organic cane sugar. Good news there.

Sambazon's frozen Pure Acai Smoothie packet has zero sugar. I use it and add less than a T. of honey in the smoothie on Food 4 Life (side-bar), and it's plenty sweet. Yes, there is sugar content in honey. But only 9 g's. Note: Sambazon has a packet with 13 grams of sugar (Original packet). They have a drink/juice that has no sugar added, just Acai and Agave.

MonaVie. I'm not sure about their sugar content. I would think theirs would be natural sugar from the 19 juices. I will ck on that. I haven't tasted any yet, but guess who is sending me some to try????? Yelp, Betty and Bill. I was so excited when she emailed me today and told me it was on its way. Her news came at a good time as I had a challenging day. I told her I might just guzzle down the whole bottle in one setting! Too, I joked and asked her if MV is a fermented product? Fun Times! Oh my. Don't worry folks, it's not. BUT it does have a LOT more antioxidants than red wine.

So I'll be back to report more on MonaVie. I expect good things.

So What To Pick?
Here's the deal. There is room for everyone. I think!

ON THE ROAD: Well, if you want a quick smoothie while you are on the road, try Jamba Juice. You might want to ask them to hold the soy and add xtra Acai juice. Remember they do add a scoop of sherbet. But other than that, all they add is real fruit and ice. It's sad we now have to add "real" to a product. Like what else is there!?

AT HOME: If you want to make a tasty smoothie at home, try Sambazon's frozen Pure Acai. By the way, they have a variety of products.

AS A DAILY SUPPLEMENT: For a juice loaded with mega supplements, you might want to consider MonaVie on a regular daily basis. And I bet you can use it in your smoothies as well. I, for one, am planning on trying it in LN's Acai smoothie. MV has, I believe, two products.

I can't address O.N.E. at the moment except to say I'm open. Would I drink O.N.E. while out and about? For sure. I just don't usually choose drinks that have larger amounts of sugar. But I'm not as opposed when it's an organic sugar. Also, I believe O.N.E. just has a few products.

Now go out and be smart. Do your own research. Find what works best for U !!

Get Organic? Get Well?

Ever had one of those daze?

The Acai article yesterday evoked much curiosity. Thanks for your many emails and comments.

Here's An Update:
Sambazon and MonaVie do pasteurize their products. Jamba Juice is getting back with me today; I'm certain they do as well. Also, I'm awaiting a return call from O.N.E. Amazon Acai that Lucy recommended. But before you and I get our organics in a tizzy, let me clarify. They flash-pasteurize. Kettle-pasteurizing is the more invasive process that we hope to stay away from. OK, so do you feel a little better? Hummmm.

Let's Consider Why They Pasteurize
We are dealing with the Amazon, folks, where there are not a few hundred, but thousands of animal species. Remember the 1.2 BILLION acres with 2.5 million of rain forest? Pretty big place. Which most has been undiscovered and uncharted.

Species Brings Feces
With that many animals comes what? Lots of pets? Sure. How about lots of feces. It's life, folks! At least it's organic. That's why you might hear me say "crap". I'm very into organic, even in slang speech.

OK, let's get serious. Feces in record #s on the Acai berry could create a problem for those of us who want to consume it in record #s. So what to do?

The Companies Standards
The cleaning process is thorough. But even with that, the possibilities of contaminates exist. Enters the flash-pasteurization process. Again, it's life. Nothing is perfect. Sorry to disillusion you! Would you rather have: a good quality supplement with little chance of croaking or a higher potent supplement which could land you in the hospital or the morgue? You decide, after all it's your life.

The companies are also practicing GMP's. Good Manufacturing Practices. While the U.S. has standards, Brazil is just that, Brazil. However, I was told by a Sambazon company associate that Brazil will at some point (soon is the prediction)climb the ladder to better health practices. U.S. companies are ahead of the game.

How Do We Decide What To Buy?
Should we buy organic? Of course. However, you probably know that just because a product says organic doesn't mean it's necessarily so. Again, it depends on the criteria of the country or company. What is their definition of "ORGANIC"? I mean, after all, our cereals are allowed to have X amount of rodent hairs and such in each box. OH, Goodness, were you eating breakfast...cereal, no less? Sorry. But then rodent hairs are somewhat organic, are they not? OK, so I'll stop with the goofing.

Back to organic. For instance, MonaVie has 19 fruits with a wide range of colors which adds Xtra benefits for the supplement. But the fruits are not, nor can be all organic. For example the wolfberry is grown in China and China doesn't have an organic certification process. Yes, the Acai is through the Institute for Marketecology (IMO). By the way, the Acai is the greater portion of the MonaVie product, though they don't disclose just how much. You know how patents go. Which by the way, I was told that they have a patent, but my research unveiled the patent is pending. That's common.

So while companies like this try to keep their products as pure as possible, there is no way any product from any company is completely unadulterated. Let's get real here. We live in a toxic world, especially here in America. What we breathe, eat, touch; it's all toxic at some level. The only pure place is Heaven. And we ain't there. Well, that's my understanding and my opinion. I know you can't tell I have those. The strong kind, of course.

Standardization and Stabilization
I've been a distributor for supplement companies. The best of the best, with stabilization and standardization. Pharmaceutical grade. Which by the way, please take note. Find out if the natural product you are buying has that clout in its bottle. If not, quit using it. Otherwise, you may be getting nothing more than a pill/drink with zero supplement content in it. Rip-off. But if you believe in the power of suggestion, it might work for you. But then, you might want to go to a counselor. However, that will cost you, too. Oh my. I think I better stop again. Please hear my heart in my humor.

Look For GPA Standards
Note above. Look into the company's policies. See it with your own eyes.

Look For Patents or Patents Pending
Go to the company administration and find out. Don't rely on their associates. Ex: just yesterday, I was told three incorrect pieces of info about MonaVie. The associate was passionate about his product, but passionately wrong. Thankfully, Betty (previous article) helped me find the correct answers. Thanks, Betty!

The Best Options R More Than On A Shelf
And, please, oh please, do not go into your local GMC and think you are getting the best natural supplements. There are Network Marketing companies that I can assure you are better than some of the junk sold on the store shelf. Get over the Network Marketing of days gone by. They are that. Gone by, or bye-bye. Not all, but at least in many cases. Replacements: honest and good people with fantastic products. Check them out before you run. I did and was thankful as it saved my health. That's another story!

Testimonials/Life Experiences
But legit ones. Talk to people you know and trust before believing in a product. I'm not saying don't try a product. I'm saying proceed with caution.

Get Off Of Yo Lazy Bo-hiney And Research
And, PLEASE, for those of us who are not relying on doc being God anymore, listen up. Don't turn around and do the same thing you did for years. You know when you acquiesced your entire life and mind over to the medical world? Don't give your mind and life over to "health and wellness" doctors. First, find out what their credentials are. Think for yourself. Research. Don't be lazy. Be an informed consumer of natural products. And get healthy without getting robbed by the next latest and greatest magic potion! There is no such thing, nor will there ever be. There will always be imperfection on this earth. Told you I was strongly opinionated.

Acai Who or What?????

Some of you have asked what in the world is ACAI???? It was noted on my Food 4 Life smoothie recipe on the side-bar. Which by the way, I used a 100 gram packet of frozen Acai.

For starters, it's typically pronounced ah-sigh-EE, but probably should be ah-sah-EE . Click on the pronunciation, and it will take you to a site where you can hear how it sounds.

A Berry is A Berry, Right?
While the Acai is often compared to the blueberry, there is not much comparison. Their coloring is similar and that's about it. Even then the Acai skin is darker, which is a factor in why it's loaded with antioxidants, etc.

Where does the Acai come from? You won't be able to go on an "Acai pick" unless you can take a trip to the Amazon. As a side note, there are over 1.2 billion acres of rain forest in the great Amazon. Most of which has been uncharted and undiscovered.

Acai berries have grown in the Amazon rain forest of Brazil for thousands of years. While they are just now making the news, they made their way to the West in the early 1900s. Acai berries have been used for medicinal purposes by the natives for probably just as many years in Brazil.

What's In A Berry?
Acai berries are more seed than not. The meat of the fruit is minimal (10%). However, little is much. The berries are rich in antioxidants. ORAC for Acai reflects the highest antioxidant of all berries.

They are touted as having omega-3 fatty acids, essential amino acids, rich vitamins A,B and C, dietary fiber and proteins, omega-9s are especially rich (found in virgin oil), as well as the mega anti-oxidants. It's been noted by some that Acai has three times the antioxidant of blueberries and eight times that of strawberries. Get this, 30 x the antiox of red wine.

Here's The Catch
While they are potent with what our bodies need, their properties begin to quickly diminish within a short time (24 hours)after they are harvested. And unless we live in the Amazon, what's a person to do?! We can only hope to get as close to the real deal as we can by finding companies that truly represent the best quality. Of which, I'm currently doing my own research. More on that later.

It seems, thus far, the only way to preserve the potency at some level is to freeze, or freeze-dry them once they are picked by the locals. Freeze facilities are set up in close proximity where the fruit is being harvested. The fruit is sent by boat to processing centers. From there, we may find the results on our store shelf or Internet.

How To Pick The Product
Be careful what you believe when someone tries to sell you a great Acai product. Check out the resource.

I first heard of Acai on my visits to Jamba Juice, my fav smoothie shop. I have them omit the soy milk and replace it with xtra Asia juice. I'm still checking on Jamba's quality of Acai. Still it's a great smoothie. Not everyone likes it, at least not the way they make it for me! It's a little too tart for the sweet at heart.

Since then, my journey lead me to Whole Foods and other such markets. Most of them carry frozen Acai. The company I've chosen to use at this point is SAMBAZON. You might want to check out there website. I enjoyed the footage on the Amazon.

Interestingly enough, I received an email about Acai from a lovely lady and friend yesterday while doing my research. How weird is that? Well, it depends on how you define those kinds of moments. She is a person I trust, so I was open to hearing what she had to say.

Betty was an owner of a very successful Bed & Breakfast for years, to which I frequented whenever I could. Currently, she and her hubby, Bill, are busy enjoying life in semi-retirement, at an early age, I might add.

OK, the product Betty distributes is called MonaVie. Check out her website. I did and enjoyed it as well. Vie comes from the word Life. The Brazilians call the Acia palm tree the Tree of Life! MonaVie comes in liquid form. Not to worry. It is 100% Pure Acai (freeze dried and frozen puree-pulp). The added feature to MonaVie is that they have added 18 other types of fruits to the formula with Acai being their crown jewel. Check out this article on the product. Their patent is pending.

Visit the Bar 2-morrow!

Hello! Home at last. While I've missed blogland, I can't say I've missed TX heat. Ah, but we are nearing the end of August!

While gone, I had the thought that it might be nice to add something new to the blog. Just 4 U !

Keeping it simple so you can R&R (read and run), I've decided to add a NEW tip for the week. Only this one will be a healthy tip, not that Pilates isn't.

Get ready to be challenged. Starting tomorrow, I'll be adding "it" to the side bar. I haven't decided what the heading will be. And, no, I won't be texting it tomorrow morning, like Obama! LOL By the way, who is his vp? Don't worry, I'm not going to get political on you. Only pilateal.

See U tomorrow on the side-bar.

Vacationing While Working

Yes, I'm still on vacation, if you can call it that. Please do. I am truly enjoying taking time off from my routine schedule in the heat of Texas' summer. I don't miss it at all. The cooler temps here on the east coast have gladly enveloped me.

But I never stray far from Pilates. You can take the girl out of Pilates for a week, but you can't take Pilates out of the girl! And all without equipment. Note the Tips For The Week.

Too, while it's nice to take a break, it's just as rejuvenating when people ask questions about the system wherever I go.

See you in a few days with a fresh look at some very old subjects.

Tips 4 The Week At-A-Glance

Some of you have requested to have the Tips For The Week at-a-glance. I will post them on a two month basis. Which means this one will cover the tips for June-July 2008. ENJOY!

June 2, 2008

Alignment, Alignment, Alignment! Need I say anymore? Pay attention to where you are in space. You includes your entire body. Is your head running ahead of your body? Is it tilted to one side? Are your shoulders slouched? Are they level? Is your pelvis neutral or is it tilting? Are your knees and feet turned out or in? Catch yourself in the mirror and correct your posture! REVIEW the 5 Principles of Alignment.

June 8
What's the first thing you do and the last thing you do in this life? Breathe! Pretty important stuff. So how well do you do it? Check yourself this week. Is it shallow or deep? Remember that deep breathing is critical to the work of Pilates as well as your everyday activities. Try it and feel the difference. Review #1 in the 5 Basic Principles of Alignment.

June 15
Put your best foot forward. Which one is that? Both, just not at the same time! OK, here's the 1st TIP: Awareness. Notice where your feet are when you stand, sit, or walk. Besides the ground. How far apart are they? Are they pointing in the same direction? ETC. Work on keeping them in alignment with the knee. Try not to roll them out or in. Seize neutral! Read the Foot Series for more insight.

June 22
Head Nods R NOT jams into the chest. Head nods are not a flexion of your whole cervical spine (C 1-7). Rather they're initiated from the atlas and axis (top two vertebrae). It's an ever so slight movement of the head/neck. Gentle. Try it in a seated position. It's small but huge. Especially when you consider most of our heads are as heavy as 8-10 pound bowling balls. Amazing.

June 29
Your core. Do you know what that really is? Transversus Abdominus, (TVA). It rests deep below your larger, surface muscles. Below your rectus abdominus, external/internal obliques. Most often people work the latter three and not the TVA. Stand. Inhale. Wrap your tummy like it's in a girdle. Exhale while lifting up from your pelvic floor (similar to a Kegel). Practice makes better!

July 6, 2008
How does your spine move? It was Designed to flex, extend, rotate, and move laterally up and over. Implement all of these in your body daily for better health and lifetime results.

July 13
Some people get confused about extension and flexion of the spine? Simply put, extension is when you are moving away from your body. When you are in flexion, it's moving toward your body. Remember, we need both of these invited into our bodies on a daily basis if we want to create an avenue for health. NOTE: For more detail, ck Posts on July 16-18.

July 20
Pass on your passion for health. Find one person this week to share your desire to take better care of your body, mind, and spirit. Just one. Even if you are NOT there yourself, you will make a difference. You might want to refer them to our blogsite and website.

July 27
Find the nearest doorway. Yes, doorway. Amazing props are available in our own home. Position yourself with your back against the frame. Use this as a tool to align your body. Think of where you are in space. Ex: Is the back of your head touching the frame? Is it slightly away from the frame? Or is it out of alignment, taking off out in front of your body? Correct your posture. Dosage: At least two times a day for the rest of your life.

Tips On Tips # 3

Lateral movement of the spine; a zesty ingredient to add to your daily diet.

Let's make this a little more simple, by reviewing the previous article from yesterday. I'll wait; Go take a peek! Get your mirror, your chair, your rolled up towel (if needed), your music of choice, and your very own special spot.

READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING BEFORE PROCEEDING:
  • Find your chair, sit upright (no leaning back or forward) with your body aligned. CORE engaged, as instructed in yesterday's article, let's begin.

  • With your arms up and just below shoulder height and out to the side (a little forward of the shoulder), inhale to prepare. This position can help to protect the shoulder area. Again, if you have something going on with your shoulder girdle, seek a professional. If you are able to exercise, you can crisscross your arms across your chest to protect your shoulder/arm.

  • As you exhale, begin to slowly laterally take your torso up-and-over to your right side only as far as you can keep your tush planted on the chair. If one of your cheeks begins to lift, STOP. That's your body sending you a memo. Stay within your range-of-motion. Too, seize the moment: work on keeping your tush/hips square in front of you, and down.

  • Allowing your arms to float with you, but keeping them in the same plane, same level, same distance a part. Keep them stable.

  • Inhale at the bottom. As you exhale, begin to return slowly to the top. Stop.

  • Inhale to prepare. Exhale as you begin to lift up and over to your left side.

  • Inhale at the bottom. Exhale as you begin lifting yourself back up slowly to the beginning position. Stop. Repeat 5 x on both sides.
TAKE NOTE:

I stress saying up-and-over, because we are NOT talking about slumping over to the side. Too many people get caught in that trap. This is NOT about seeing how far you can lean. Again, it's about precision and control. Up-and-Over? That means you are lifting UP your body, your rib cage, and then slowly moving laterally from the torso OVER, or OUT to the side.

All too often we think putting our bodies in a wide range of motion, ROM, is the desired goal. That works for those who are far advanced, and most of us may never be there. What matters is that you find the ROM for your particular body. Keeping that range is critical to performing the move so that you do not lose control of your stability and balance. Therefore, we can comfortably say: ROM=Stability, Balance, Control.

CAUTION: Exercise at your own risk. Seek a trusted health professional before starting any exercise program.

Giving A Tip On Tips! #2

Tip-of-the-Week, TIPS!!!! Oh my, I don't know what it means when I have to have tips on the tips. Whatever it takes. Pilates is not simple! Indeed it is like a language all to itself.

Continuing on with the different planes of motion in our spines: We addressed Flexion and Extention in a post yesterday. Today, as promised, we'll cover briefly Rotation of the spine and lateral flexion.

Find a quiet spot, like you did yesterday, away from the hustle and bustle. Plain to chill. Add gentle music, if it's your flavor. Comfortable clothing. Barefoot. A mirror. A chair. Too, if you have a difficult time keeping your knees from rubbing together, place a small rolled up towel between them. But remember to keep your legs hip-distance apart. You don't want your legs closed as it will be harder to balance.

Rotation of the spine:
  • In that same chair as yesterday, make sure you are up on top of your sit bones, legs hip-distance apart. Head on top of your body, not forward of your body. Feel as though someone is gently pulling you up from the top of your head, lengthening your neck. That should feel good.
  • Always engage your core. Always breathe!
  • If you have a shoulder issue like I do, crisscross your arms across your chest. If you are free of shoulder issues, bring your arms up and out to your sides, shoulder height, and a little forward of your shoulders.
  • Speaking of shoulders, keep them back and down. Don't crunch them up or round them over.
  • Remember to let your head follow with your spine. They go together. Don't let your head take off ahead. Keep your eyes open and keep your gaze in front of you.
  • Inhale to prepare. Exhale as you begin to slowly rotate to the right side.
The movement is from your torso; it is not an arm swing-me-to-the-side, nor is it a move-ME-from-el hippo.
  • Your hips should stay in the same square position as when you first started. Don't let them rotate, or hike up on one side. Quite a few people have to watch for this. Just make yourself aware. This is where a mirror can come in handy. You will be able to watch for hip-hiking, or rotating. As well as where your arms are in space. Are they level, or is one up higher than the other?
  • The move is not about seeing how far around you can go; it is about control, and precision. I guarantee you, it is much harder to use c. and p. than it is to sling yourself around to the back of your body. We are not trying to exorcise, but exercise the body. Big difference.
  • Once you have rotated your spine with your arms simply floating in the air as they follow your spine and head, stop. Inhale.
  • Exhale as you begin to return to your starting position. Take a look in the mirror, is your body aligned? It's worth checking.
  • Inhale to prepare. Exhale and begin to rotate to the left side, the same as you did with the previous side. Repeat 5 times.

I would say, let's take a break. Do you see why Pilates is often called intelligent exercise? You have to think, think, think! Remember, every move stems from a neurological response.

CAUTION: Always exercise at your own risk. Seek the advice of a trusted health professional before beginning any form of exercise.

Army Wives and Pilates?

Catherine Bell, Actress. Played in Jag, Army Wives, Bruce Almighty.

By the way, I have not seen any of the TV programs. B.A., I saw an edited version.

Tall, slender and gorgeous. What does she do to keep that great figure at 40 years old (Aug. 14)?

Atheletic for sure: skiing, kick-boxing, running, wake-boarding. Is she a gym rat? No, she said, in an interview with James Brady, reporter for Parade. My secret is moderation. I have a busy life and a 5-year old. But I lift weights and do Pilates, and I follow an 85% healthy diet.

Tips On Tips #1, Flexion and Extension

Not to confuse you more, but I've had a few questions about the Tip of the Week. Extension and flexion of the spine.

We need different planes of motion in our bodies. Flexion. Extension. Rotation. Lateral work as well. Need is the operative word if we want a healthy body.

Our bodies are filled with intricate details, wouldn't you say? If you ever take an anatomy or bio mechanics course, you will get a good dose of amazed. With that as a small backdrop, could we possibly think there would NOT be order in how we are to take care of our bodies?

I'll just give a simple example of each of the motions you need to feed your precious body EVERY DAY.

Remember to do any form of movement/exercise, please seek the counsel of a trusted health professional. Know your limitations.

If you are pregnant like my friend, Andrea, for example, you may remember that your hormones are running all over the place. You want to rein them in but you can't. For exercising, remember that your body is more relaxed due to the change in your hormones.

Awareness is the key.

By the way, Andrea's having a baby girl, named Hannah Hope! Congrats!

This is just a suggestion for a beginner or someone who needs to go easy:

Find a time for yourself, IN FRONT OF A MIRROR IF POSSIBLE. Get rid of all the buzz around you. Soft music, if you prefer for relaxation. Use a rolled up towel and place it between your knees if you have a difficult time in keeping them a part. You don't want them to rub. And you want your legs hip distance a part for balance. Begin.

Flexion:

  • Sitting in a chair, feet and legs hip distance apart.
  • Engage your core.
  • Hands/arms Crisscrossed over your chest.
  • Shoulders back and down, no hunching, no ear muffs.
  • With your head on top of your body allow it to flow with your spine as you gently and slowly roll forward (toward your body).
  • Do NOT slump over. And you don't need to try and make your nose hit the floor! This is a gentle movement. Only go as far as you can maintain your core, balance, and stability. You do not need to be going down to your knees with your nose either.
  • Remember to breathe.
  • Keep your head with your spine. Don't let your head take off ahead of you. Once there, stop.
  • Inhale and as you exhale begin to roll back up SLOWLY. Repeat 5 times.

Extention:

  • Sitting a little forward in a chair, with your feet and legs hip-distance apart.
  • Engage your core.
  • Hands and arms out to your sides, but staying a little below your shoulder height and slightly in front of your shoulders.
  • Now bend your elbows and bring the forearms in slowly, making an L-Shape.
  • Shoulders back and down.
  • Head on top of your body. Keeping your head with your spine. Inhale.
  • Exhale while keeping your our arms stable, begin to lean slowly back ONLY a few inches (away from the body).
  • DO NOT DO THIS WITHOUT ENGAGING YOUR CORE OR YOU CAN HURT YOUR BACK. YOUR CORE WILL PROTECT YOUR LOWER BACK. Lean ONLY a few inches.
  • Do not lose your shoulder placement or core. Inhale.
  • Exhale as you slowly return to your starting position. Repeat 5 times.

I will go over rotation and lateral work tomorrow. See you then.

Just Between US

Please always check out the side bar for the tip of the week. I may not post everyday, but I'm on the site everyday doing something behind the scenes if not on the scene!

Also, I'm getting ready to launch a book shelf with some great info on books you might want to read.

I've almost completed the next article on the foot. What a series. I hope you have learned something along the way. If you haven't had a chance to read it, give it a spin.

Remember to breathe today. That would be on the deep end of the pool, not the shallow. You know, deep breathing Pilates style.

Keep up the good work with your posture and your body will continue to thank you.

See you sooner than soon.
